39 West Press publishes books of art, poetry, literary fiction, and creative non-fiction. We are looking for innovative and well-crafted, high-quality works by new and established authors. Our desire is to promote and publish a diverse range of experiences and voices, including but not limited to people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA, as well as ethnic and cultural minorities.
From 1 January - 30 March, we accept manuscripts for full-length poetry volumes (approximately 70 pages or more) only; we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts in any other category or genre.
We are NOT looking for unsolicited submissions in the following categories: fiction (including but not limited to romance, science fiction, true crime, mystery), non-fiction, cookbooks, how-to books, or religious inspirational books. Please do not send self-published manuscripts. We are not looking for single stories, essays, or poems at this time.
Due to the volume of manuscripts we receive, we are unable to respond to every query nor provide critiques of rejected manuscripts. If we have interest in your work, then we will contact you by 1 September 2017. Please be patient. During open submissions, we received hundreds of submissions and are still in the process of process of reading and vetting the submitted manuscripts.
In December 2017, 39 West Press will publish at least one (possibly more) of the manuscripts we received during our most recent open submission period. Note: If you submitted a manuscript for a full-length poetry book in the second-half of 2016, then that manuscript is also under consideration for December 2017 publication.
Your submission should include a cover letter and your full-length poetry volume in one of the following electronic file formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .odt. No other file formats will be accepted. Please note, during OPEN SUBMISSIONS (1 January - 30 March), 39 West Press accepts unsolicited submissions for full-length poetry volumes (approximately 70 pages or more) only.
Please, do not paste your work into the body of the submission email: it will not be read. It is acceptable, however, to place your cover letter in the body of the submission email. The cover letter should include the title, description of the work, and author bio. Submissions lacking a description of the work and an author bio will not be read. If other publishers are also considering the manuscript, then please let us know. Do not submit more than one manuscript at a time unless we have solicited your work.
IMPORTANT (THIS MAY GIVE YOUR MANUSCRIPT AN ADVANTAGE OVER OTHER MANUSCRIPTS): If you have access to special markets, audiences, or promotional opportunities for your book, then we would like to know about them.
Deliver me from writers who say the way they live doesn't matter. I'm not sure a bad person can write a good book. If art doesn't make us better, then what on earth is it for?
